The 24 Elder Futhark runes

Elder Futhark is one of the earliest known Germanic rune systems. Its 24 runes are arranged in three aetts, moving from resources and vitality through challenge and transformation toward order, community and inheritance.

01

The first aett: creation, resources and life

The first eight runes begin with mobile resources and vitality, pass through impact, language, travel, fire and exchange, and arrive at joy and harmony. They describe how energy enters a life and becomes usable.

02

The second aett: limits and transformation

The second group brings hail, need, ice, cycles, endurance, uncertainty and protection. It does not promise control; it asks how a person adapts when the old order is interrupted.

03

The third aett: order, community and inheritance

The final group turns toward sun, selfhood, growth, family, property, water, harvest, humanity and divine inheritance. Together the 24 symbols can be read as a cycle of resources, testing, integration and transmission.
